What Makes a Strong Foundation for a Resin Driveway

When it comes to a resin driveway, we often focus on its smooth and seamless surface, perfect for both vehicles and pedestrians. However, it's crucial not to overlook the importance of a solid foundation beneath the surface. A good base is key to a beautiful, long-lasting resin driveway requiring minimal maintenance. In this blog, we'll discuss what makes a good base for a resin driveway and explore the ideal materials to ensure a strong and stable foundation.

Concrete and Tarmac: The Best Resin Driveway Bases

Two primary options for resin driveway bases stand out: porous concrete and asphalt. Let's take a closer look:

  1. Porous Concrete: If you're starting with a new base, allow at least 14 days for the concrete to cure. For an existing concrete base, ensure it's thoroughly cleaned. Additionally, a primer is not essential for non-porous concrete bases to ensure proper adhesion between the resin driveway and the surface but appropriate mechanical surface preparation is key.

  2. Asphalt: When laid on a suitable sub-base, such as well-compacted MOT type 3 at an appropriate depth, asphalt provides a strong and stable foundation for resin-bound surfacing.

Block Paving, Brick Paving, and Flags: The Worst Resin Driveway Bases

Block and brick paving, as well as paving slabs, are not suitable as foundations for resin driveways. These surfaces lack the solid base necessary for the proper installation of a resin driveway. If laid over such surfaces, cracking is likely to occur almost immediately due to the differential movement of modular paving systems.

SuDS-Compliant Bases for Resin Driveways: Handling Water Drainage

A significant advantage of resin-bound driveways is their porous nature, allowing water to freely drain through the surface, complying with SuDS regulations (Sustainable Drainage System). However, to achieve SuDS compliance, the base beneath the resin surface must also facilitate proper water drainage.

To achieve SuDS compliance, a specialist blend of porous concrete or open-grade material is laid over Type 3 MOT aggregate. This combination allows water to drain through the surface and into the ground, effectively managing water drainage.

A strong foundation is crucial for a beautiful and durable resin driveway. By opting for a suitable base like porous concrete, you can ensure a stable surface that withstands the test of time. Avoid using unsuitable bases like block paving, brick paving, or flags, as they lack the necessary solidity. Additionally, SuDS compliance is essential for effective water drainage, making the choice of base material even more critical.
